Great Doubt, known as one of the three pillars of Zen, contains words of doubt that bring us faith. Wonder of all wonders, it turns out to be a Zen book about God, that constantly brings us back to the big questions, i.e., is there any difference between God and the awakening we so fervently clamor after in Zen? Great Doubt does nothing less than carve out a new niche in Western Dharma. In short, simple chapters packed with the wisdom of a teacher who cut his eye teeth at San Francisco Zen Center in the glory days, this manual manages to combine East with West, psychotherapy with Zen, and your mother's wisdom with the Buddha's. These lessons will stand the test of time. Hawkins' mix of Eastern Zen and Western psychology gives the reader a unique view into both the human psyche and the heart. If we take this book to heart, it is not easy reading. And yet it is effortless. Great Doubt is a book of intense little Dharma talks we don't take notes; we simply let the Dharma wash over us. Not to be missed if you believe your inner wisdom can guide you. The author challenges old perceptions and entreats us to stop thinking and start knowing. Advanced praise for the book by a respected Zen teacher and editors, Lou Mitsunen Nordstrom and Parabola Magazine.

Great Doubt The Spirit of Self Inquiry Roger Shikan Hawkins 9781460932353 Books

I strongly recommend this book to practitioners at all levels. Hawkins is a fresh voice in our vast and ever-expanding dharma universe. In each of 53 short chapters (one for each week of the year, if you like), Hawkins speaks directly to the reader--it's as if he's sitting on the sofa beside you! His words read like poetry mixed with selfless love. Just skimming through the chapter titles will give you an idea of the simplicity and profundity of this book. For example: CRISIS, CONTROL, DESIRE, PRAYER, THE FREE GIFT, NO VACANCY, SPACE, MAGIC.... Hawkins puts words to the kinds of things we start to wonder about before we can talk. This is a deeply comforting book. Every page invites our beginner's mind to look up, listen, see and be seen.

A wonderful way of seeing no separation between my Christian faith and Buddhism.
Roger Hawkins' book is very enlighteneing for a new student on the path. It opened up my mind to new realms of spiritual inquiry that I was not previously conscious of. I realized how much I want to know God, the source of all creation, and how small a part the thinking mind plays in this process.

His penetrating insights bring the heart and mind together to express a depth of inquiry that reveals its source in the one reality we all share. Hawkins welcomes us to explore our own deepest questions about the meaning of existence, with intuitive insights grounded in an intimate connection with Being itself. He skillfully reveals how our deepest inquiry into the mystery revolves around the question of our being loved, and he compasssionately leads us to the willingness to receive the answer that we are always unconditionally loved.
Roger Hawkins is one of the rare spiritual teachers who is more interested in inquiring into All That Is rather than in selling a particular devotional path. Hawkins effortlessly blends Eastern and Western thought. This inclusive approach challenges the reader to let go of preconceived ideas and to recognize the same truths that exist in all religions although they may be expressed in different rituals, dogma or metaphors.

Hawkins wears his Zen sensei title lightly. Although it is clear that his writing is based on spiritual experiences and years of Zen training, he is not afraid to show his human side and the challenges that go with life's journey. I have read this book twice now and assume it is one of the rare books that I will re-read for many years to come. I highly recommend it.
